Inauguration of the Seminary Academic Year 2021-2022

In most of the Catholic institutes it is a venerable tradition to inaugurate the academic year with a Holy Spirit Mass and Lectio Brevis. This year too St Pius College following this venerable tradition began the academic year with the Holy Spirit Mass which was presided over by His Lordship Bishop Dominic Savio Fernandes, Auxiliary Bishop of Bombay. The exhilarating choir and the beautiful liturgy raised our hearts to a sublime experience which cannot be expressed by mere words. The CCC ensured the live streaming of the Mass for all the students attending online. The main highlight of the liturgy was the homily of Bishop Dominic. Bishop Dominic emphasized that as anointed ones of God we are called to be the living Gospel of our times. He further highlighted the aspect of perseverance. He exhorted us that as Priests and future Priests we should never allow the flame of the Spirit to die in us.

The Lectio Brevis which was presented by Fr Francis Gonsalves SJ, President of Jnana-Deepa Institute of Philosophy and Theology, was the continuation of the same message. Fr Francis while delivering an excellent exposition on Challenges of the Priesthood in Covid times laid great stress that through baptism we are anointed by the Holy Spirit, and that the common Priesthood that we all share through our baptismal consecration is the root of our Priestly calling. The whole exposition in the form of Prospects and Challenges was explained beautifully through the perspective of Contextual Theology, Ecclesiology and Pastoral Theology. Church History, Vatican Documents, Church teachings were well summarized to explain the contemporary and pastoral challenges that have plagued the world in Covid times and how as Pastors we can respond to them. Fr Francis ended his exposition by quoting Pope Francis who during his pontificate has continually stressed that Priests should be instruments of love and Pastors who know the smell of the sheep. The Lectio Brevis concluded with a question answer session and a Vote of Thanks was proposed by one of the Brothers.
