The Lectio Brevis, marking the formal commencement of the academic year, was held at St. Pius X college and Institute of Theology with solemnity and reverence. This annual tradition, observed in ecclesiastical institutions of higher learning sets the academic and spiritual tone for the year ahead.

The program began with an introductory address by Fr Andrew Aranha, Dean of the Institute, who highlighted the historical and academic significance of the Lectio Brevis. He then introduced the chief guest and speaker for the occasion, His Grace Archbishop John Rodrigues, Archbishop of Bombay. The Archbishop was warmly welcomed by Fr Dolreich Pereira, Dean of Philosophy, who  presented him with a potted plant—symbolizing growth, rootedness, and new beginnings.

In his address, Archbishop John Rodrigues focused on two pressing realities in contemporary society: uncertainty and fragmentation. He referenced recent traumatic global events to illustrate the unpredictable nature of modern life. Fragmentation, he noted, affects both the societal level through inequality, and the personal level where individuals struggle to integrate their experiences and beliefs.

In the face of these challenges, the Archbishop underscored the Christian call to hope. He invoked the powerful image of the Jubilee Year Cross, portraying hope as an anchor for the soul. He encouraged seminarians to open themselves to deep spiritual formation so that they may become true bearers of hope, as Pope Francis has called for.

He further emphasized the communal nature of seminary life, urging unity in diversity and visible expressions of hope through ministry—especially among the marginalized, including migrants, prisoners, the unborn, and the poor. He cited Pope Francis’ Eight Signs of Hope as practical pathways for ministry.

The program concluded with a brief question-answer session, a vote of thanks by Br. Sujith, the Seminary Anthem, and a festive community lunch.
